Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterThe website in my previous post should be Ken Nagel instead of Mike Nagel. Sorry ’bout that.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterFinally found a picture of a ’54 convertible interior. It is for sale at the Mike Nagel website. There is a good picture of the back seat area and it appears the “dome” light is part of the panel under the quarter window. I only saw a picture of the passenger side but assume there is a light on the driver’s side as well.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterIf you want to participate in the Woodward Dream Cruise acitivites on Friday/Saturday in Dearborn/Detroit while at the IMOA show you can have a place to park along Woodward (usually in a businesses parking lot, not on the street) for $35. If you have not been to this event before I can tell you that it is pretty much a “zoo” and a place to park and watch all the cars can be desirable. You do not need to pay to park anywhere as you can park along a side street (if you can find a decent place) and watch the cruisers on Woodward. The city even sets up bleachers so you can sit and watch. You can also just cruise Woodward Ave at no cost to you. Woodward is open to regular traffic during the cruise and there are some very interesting cars cruising. I have been once as a spectator and guest of the Detroit Convention Bureau and frankly swore I would never go back. However, if you have not been you might find this a very interesting experience. IMOA is just making this parking area available to our members through a third party. Hope this helps.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterI am not sure what “show” you are referring to. Please advise.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterI looked up part numbers at Mac’s Auto Parts for a ’62 Galaxie and a ’62 Monterey. Both hardtops take the same door seal kit. I would then assume that the doors are similar enough to use the same “fuzzies”. By the way the door seal kit part number at Macs and also Dennis Carpenter is C2AZ-6520530-PR. Hope this helps.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterHey Tom, since you are using a Ford 2 door body for your project I think locating the emblem in the Ford slot would be appropriate. Hope it is coming along well.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterI finally managed to find a ’54 wagon on youtube that had a decent shot of the tailgate area. The “MercOMatic” script (obviously not an overdrive car) was located just above the license plate bracket on the tailgate. Does that help much?
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterThere were in fact full sized wagons in ’63. Two models of Colony Park. A six passenger and a 9 passenger, both 4 doors. Total production and price for the 6 passenger were 6447 and $3295. For the 9 passenger the numbers are 7529 and $3365
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterJerry has a great suggestion. I would also suggest you use the “access member directory” feature of the website (upper right in the login section). It lists all of our members who own 49s (just click on the year) along with their contact information. I would assume any of them would be happy to help you.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterThe first serial number for the 9CM was 101 so this is indeed a late in the year car. Mercury did not include any info on engine or trans or rear end on the data plate until the later 50s. They only offered one engine size (with some horsepower differences based on exhaust and carburation) and either an automatic or manual trans (3 speed only) until 1957. I was able to find the paint code which is a color called dakota grey. The Dittzler PPG matching code is 30478. The paint chip on line looks like a very light tan to my eye and not a grey but I am certainly no artist and have no eye for color. No luck at all with the trim code but I will keep looking.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterWould suggest you check the “member directory” on this website. There is a ’59 Parklane 2 dr hardtop listed in Palm Springs. Unfortunately it doesn’t list the color but does have contact info for the owner. Good luck.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterAs for your clock and speedometer check out United Speedometer in Riverside, CA. They can recondition your entire instrument cluster as well as your clock and speedometer. Just do a google search on United Speedometer.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterProbably none as long as your wallet can afford the oil and plugs.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterThe down draft tube vented the crankcase to atmosphere before closed crankcase venilation systems (PCV) were required. I don’t remember what year closed systems became required but I think it was in the early 60s. The downdraft tube came off the intake manifold and went down to exhaust the gasses under the car.
Don’t think an intake leak is going to cause the kind of problem you have. It may be time to yank it back out and look at the internals.
Virgil & Sue KleinKeymasterA leak down test will tell you if you are losing compression through the valve train or past the compression rings. You have plenty of compression but it won’t hurt anything to do a leak down. Using 1.5 quarts of oil per 100 miles is extrememly excessive even for an engine with, oh say, 200,000 miles on it. The oil is getting past the oil rings somehow. It could be from internal engine pressure caused by no venting of the crank case (a plugged PCV valve if so equipped) or a restriction to atmosphere in the down draft tube. The other thing that could be causing this much oil use is improper oil rings or improperly installed oil rings. I think it is time to have a discussion with the “guy who did your motor.” One other thing that could cause oil in the cylinders at this rate is a bad fuel pump if you have a dual action fuel pump. If the vacuum side of the pump is bad it will suck oil out of the crankcase at a prodigous pace.
